Celebration of the life and works of Sir David Attenborough

Each year Ashby Arts Festival creates a Giant Outdoor Gallery as part of our popular annual festival.

Local volunteer artists create huge 8 foot by 4 foot artworks to a theme which we then display on walls around Ashby for approximately 8 weeks – creating a huge art trail for local people and visitors to follow around town.

In 2026 we are celebrating the amazing  writer, broadcaster and naturalist, Sir David Attenborough, who turns 100 in May 2026. Although born in Middlesex, Sir David grew up in Leicester so here in Leicestershire we are happy to consider him "one of our own". Most of us have grown up learning to understand, care for and appreciate the natural world through his many TV programmes and through his advocacy for environmental causes. We want our boards to showcase the wonders of our amazing planet and celebrate Sir David's huge contribution.

If you would like to paint one of the huge 8 by 4 foot artboards for this event  - please email ashbyartsfestival@gmail.com as soon as possible for more information. Artists should must be over 16 to participate as an individual. Younger artists may participate through their schools/youth clubs/scouting groups/churches etc.

The Gallery will be in place around town from 7th May for 8 weeks.

Local animal artist Katy Ferrari has created a stunning pencil portrait of Sir David Attenborough to mark a truly special milestone.

As the beloved naturalist and broadcaster celebrates his 100th birthday this May, Ashby Arts Festival will be joining the celebrations.

Known for her extraordinary attention to detail and ability to capture the spirit of wildlife and nature, Katy’s work perfectly honours a man whose life has been dedicated to protecting the natural world.

We encourage everyone to take a moment to explore her work - it really is something special.
